A few weeks ago, a Social Media Cheat Sheet was doing the round. A nice visualization of the pro’s & cons of each social media channel, but with a business/marketing focus. I thought I should do one for social media use in education. However for most of the teachers I work with, our Moodle (EIT Online) is still their primary online teaching environment. So instead I set out to create this poster size guide for teachers, allowing them to compare the functionality and pedagogical advantages of some standard Moodle tools, adding a column to indicate how tricky the tool is to set up.

  1. Dear Richard Solomon, thanks so much for your kind words. High praise indeed, and much appreciated.

  2. To everyone who has offered to do translations, I am in the process of sending out the source files to all of you.

Thanks for contributing to the Moodle Community! (We rock!)

  3. Great tool, helps the teacher in deciding on the tools to use within the Moodle environment

  4. Really impressive. We’re moving to using Moodle at the two schools in our federation. We’re currently using a vle which isn’t allowing us to easily do basic stuff like set and mark assignments. Obviously our teachers will need to learn about the key features of moodle. This chart will be invaluable. Thank you for sharing such good work.

  11. This is a great resource Joyce. Did you create it in Adobe or some other software then convert it. Would you be willing to share the orginal file so I could add/edit the file for our own purposes.

    Thanks

  12. Your Moodle Tool Guide is great. It prints well into A3 size too.
I have used embedit.in and added it to a Moodle resource blog that I am building for Coventry University (URI in another field in this form). I have given credit to you and included the link to your source but if you do not like the way that I have used the image, please email me and I will remove it.

  13. Joyce,
Many thanks. This is a prime example of ‘keeping it simple’. Thanks so much for a wonderfully simple to use & understand guide that all our staff over here love.

  35. Great reference chart that’s very attractive, too. I use a moodle platform customized for online learning communities that occur outside the formal classroom and curriculum. We are always seeking to engage the high school age student ambassadors in leading and supporting group learning and social bonding activities with other students in the community but have a nervous technologist who is concerned about giving too many folks editing controls.

I have never thought about the database as a direct deposit opportunity by students; do they add materials directly or rely on the instructor/facilitator to upload their resources? We have used wikis for all student members to populate with links, pictures, narrative, podcast links, etc. or books that we community facilitators upload student- and other generated resources into. But the book is a chokehold on info flow.

We use the discussion forums for Jams (our term for purposeful and sustained group discussion over a couple of days for a national audience; shorter time frames for smaller and geographically cohesive groups) and chats for ‘cruising-level’ social interactions. The wiki, glossary, and lightbox gallery (with links to Picasa and Flickr to display students’ photos of their hometowns and projects) are the collaborative and showcase tools that we use most often. I have not used the lesson, assignment, or quiz tools at all.

The tool guide is very helpful. I will use it myself and to acquaint others with the power of different moodle tools. Thank you.
